Home Plate Classic IX Results Team Yellow's sweet victory
Louisiana Culinary Institute (LCI) and the guest judges would like to congratulate both teams for participating in the final round of the Home Plate Classic IX, held on July 17th. Although it was a tough and close decision the Yellow Team was victorious over the Green Team. Peaches were the mystery ingredient for this year's classic Each team did an outstanding job and this competition will go down in history as one of the closest scored Home Plate Classics. Guest judges included: - Rita Salmon -Herb Society or HSABR and donated LCI's herb garden and will be helping with the greenhouse in the new facility.
- Jesse Gunkel - FNL AM Meteorologist from FOX 44 and NBC 33 in Baton Rouge.
- Monika Oliver - President/CEO Baton Rouge Center for World Affairs, Inc.
- Copper Alvarez - Is a representative from the Farmers Market and BREADA.
- Kathy Mullin - Team teacher for HSABR is on the Herb Society Committee.
- Michael Nickelotte - Sr. Manager Business Development/Review for Sysco New Orleans.
Team Yellow consisted of (Team Captain) Lauryn Leger, Chris Ward, Zachary Watters, Patricio Veas, Evan Andrews, Elisha Gates, and Chris Cruse. Team Yellow's menu was a wonderful mix of unique flavors and great presentation. They had five courses to serve to our guest judges. The winning menu is as follows: - First Course: Banana Leaf Wrapped Halibut served over a Peach Pilaf with a Peach Beurre Blanc
- Second Course: Duck Breast served over Sweet Peach Mashed Potatoes with a Peach Pomegranate Molasses Gastrique
- Third Course: Almond Encrusted Goat Cheese, Spinach, Marinated Onion, Grilled Peaches with Warm Peach Vinaigrette
- Fourth Course: Venison Backstrap on Red Potato and Peach Brabant with a Spicy Peach Puree *Judges Favorite*
- Fifth Course: Peach Crème Brule
Team Green consisted of Ben Duck, (Team Captain) Don Green, Trip Illing, Brandon Kling, Marla Chua and Brad Bridges. Keeping with the peach theme the Green Team came with some strong flavors and creative ideas. For the first time we had guest judges asking for to-go containers because the dessert so good. Marla Chua's Peach Tart with Brandy Cream Sauce was a homerun and the talk of the competition. Team Green came in second place and this was their menu: - First Course: Peach and Pork Sausage served on a Bed of Greens Complemented with a Honey Vinaigrette
- Second Course: Peach Won-Ton served with a Sherry Soy Sauce
- Third Course: Peach and Duck Napoleon served with a Sweet Onion Chutney
- Fourth Course: Peach Tart with a Brandy Cream Sauce *Judges Favorite*
