LCI Student of the Month: How Demondre Morgan Found His Path in Culinary Arts
Choosing a culinary school is a big decision. For many aspiring chefs, the journey does not begin with years of professional kitchen experience. Sometimes it starts with curiosity, a desire to learn, and the willingness to grow.
That is exactly what makes Louisiana Culinary Institute (LCI) Student of the Month Demondre Morgan’s story unique. A Baton Rouge native and third-semester student in LCI’s Culinary Arts program, Demondre came to culinary school with a passion for cooking and a desire to build the skills needed for his future career.
While some of his classmates entered the program with more cooking experience, Demondre quickly learned that culinary school is designed for students at different stages of their journey. At LCI, everyone comes together to learn, practice, and develop the skills needed to succeed in the culinary industry.
Do You Need Cooking Experience Before Attending Culinary School?
No, you do not need years of cooking experience before attending culinary school. Many students begin their culinary education to learn the fundamentals, improve their skills, and gain hands-on experience.
When Demondre started at LCI, he noticed that many of his classmates already had experience cooking for themselves. However, he never felt behind. Instead, he saw culinary school as an opportunity for everyone to continue learning together.
“Everybody is learning together,” Demondre shared about his experience at LCI. While his classmates may have had different levels of experience coming into the program, the fast-paced environment helped everyone continue growing as future culinary professionals.
For students considering culinary school, Demondre’s experience shows that the most important qualities are curiosity, dedication, and an open mind.
What Should You Look for When Choosing a Culinary School?
When choosing a culinary school, students should consider more than just whether a program offers cooking classes. The overall educational experience, hands-on training, instructors, facilities, and career preparation all play an important role.
Demondre first started thinking about LCI in high school while exploring college options. After researching different schools and programs, he decided LCI offered something different.
While other options offered culinary programs, Demondre felt LCI provided the experience of attending a dedicated culinary school rather than simply taking culinary classes. After touring the LCI campus, he knew it was the right environment for his goals.
For students looking for a complete culinary education, finding a school focused specifically on culinary arts can provide a more immersive experience.
What Is It Like Attending Louisiana Culinary Institute?
Attending Louisiana Culinary Institute is a hands-on, fast-paced experience designed to prepare students for careers in the culinary industry.
For Demondre, his time at LCI has been both challenging and rewarding. He describes the experience as tiring but says he has learned a tremendous amount throughout the program. One of the things that has stood out most is the variety of instruction from LCI’s chefs.
Each chef brings a different teaching style and personality to the classroom, helping students learn from multiple perspectives. That combination of hands-on practice, instruction from experienced chefs, and collaboration with classmates helps students build confidence in the kitchen.
What Do Culinary Students Learn Besides Cooking?
Culinary students learn much more than just how to prepare individual dishes. They develop skills across multiple areas of food preparation, including techniques, organization, presentation, and understanding different areas of the culinary industry.
Although Demondre is part of LCI’s Savory program, one of his favorite experiences was the Introduction to Baking and Pastry class. The course gave him the opportunity to learn dessert preparation and expand his skills beyond savory cooking. His favorite savory dish he has prepared at LCI is an omelet because he loves breakfast foods. This broad training helps culinary students become more versatile and prepared for different career opportunities.
How Does Culinary School Prepare Students for a Career?
Culinary school helps students develop the technical skills, confidence, and experience needed to enter the food industry.
Through his time at LCI, Demondre has gained skills that he believes will help him throughout his career. He continues to practice at home and build confidence before eventually cooking for others outside the classroom.
As part of his hands-on experience, Demondre will also work with Bacon & Fig during LSU football games, including Revelry tailgating events, giving him additional exposure to real-world culinary environments.
What Careers Can You Pursue After Culinary School?
Culinary graduates can pursue many career paths, from working in restaurants and hospitality to building their own food businesses.
Demondre’s long-term goal is to become a private chef and eventually own his own business.
For many culinary students, education is the foundation that allows them to turn their passion for food into a rewarding career.
What Advice Should You Know Before Starting Culinary School?
The best advice for future culinary students is to come prepared to learn and keep an open mind.
Demondre encourages prospective students to embrace the experience and take advantage of the instructors, classmates, and opportunities available at LCI.
“The teachers are great,” he said, highlighting the personalities and support he has experienced throughout the program. Culinary school requires hard work, dedication, and a willingness to improve every day. For students who are passionate about cooking, it can be an exciting opportunity to grow.
